An Interview With Heather Knox of Project Somos

About the Project:
The Project Somos Children’s Learning Village is a nurturing educational community for at-risk Mayan (indigenous) children in Guatemala. In Guatemala, education is not free. Families living in poverty cannot afford to send their children to school and child labour is common. Project Somos aims to break the cycle of poverty through education and nutrition. Project Somos has a preschool for children 3-5 years of age, provides academic support to primary school children and for all the kids that attend, there is a nutritious hot lunch and a healthy snack every day. Our hope is that children gain the confidence and skills they need to stay in school and that these children can one day lead their families out of poverty. We provide regular parenting classes to the mothers and fathers of our students, as well as employment for some of the mamas. The Village is made up of a learning campus, a playground and ropes’ course, an organic farm, clinic & neighbourhood house, community hall and guest facilities for up to twenty. Project Somos has a volunteer program for both short and long-term volunteers which attract people from all over the world. The Project is located within the small Kaqchikel community of Chivarabal in the Central Highlands of Guatemala. We rely on the generosity and support of our donors.

Meet Heather
Heather Knox is the Co-Founder & Country Director of Project Somos Children’s Village Guatemala. She works with Guatemalan children and their families to overcome issues of poverty by providing educational and nutritional programs. Originally from Vancouver, BC, Heather and her husband, packed up all their essential belongings and drove through the USA and Mexico, to relocate in Guatemala ten years ago. Heather is a passionate photographer who loves to use this creative outlet to photograph individuals and families of the local Guatemalan community and then to print and share the photos. For many, this is the first and only photograph they have of themselves or their family and she finds this a very rewarding experience.
