This session with Rei McColley gave us a fresh perspective on what happens in our brains during communication and how we can become more intentional in the way we respond. Rei showed us how slowing down, becoming present, listening with curiosity, and developing self-awareness can help us move from automatic reactions to conscious choices.
We explored the connection between our brain networks, values, and the way we communicate, along with the simple yet powerful Mindful Minute practice for creating greater calm, awareness, empathy, and connection. This session beautifully reminded us that when we intentionally practice how we show up, we can create deeper trust and more meaningful relationships with the people around us.
🌟Rei McColley shared:
- Communication is more than the words we use. It begins with our mental and emotional state and how present we are in the moment.
- Strong communication starts with presence, self-awareness, listening, curiosity, rapport, adaptability, and intentional responses.
- Self-awareness means noticing your thoughts, emotions, and reactions as they happen, without judgment, so you can choose how to respond.
- Instead of preparing what to say next, practice listening to truly understand what the other person is saying.
- Slowing down and listening with curiosity helps create the conditions for trust, rapport, and genuine connection.
- The brain operates through different networks that influence focus, storytelling, meaning-making, intuition, empathy, and social connection.
- We can learn to deliberately switch between these brain networks instead of allowing them to run on autopilot.
- The Mindful Minute uses stretching, sensory awareness, stillness, and identifying a meaningful value to help shift out of mental overactivity and into present-moment awareness.
- Meta-awareness is the ability to notice your own thoughts, emotions, sensations, and reactions as they happen. It helps move you from autopilot to conscious choice.
- Values provide direction for how you choose to show up each moment. Practicing these skills repeatedly helps turn better communication into embodied habits that support stronger relationships, leadership, and connection.
