Grand Potential Podcast

12Feb

Our hearts were stirred and our spirits lifted at this Grand Connection event as Doug Cornfield shared a story that beautifully captured the life-changing power of kindness in action. Through the unforgettable reunion of two first-grade classmates and the ripple effect that followed, Doug showed us how one small moment of compassion can shape an entire lifetime and even spark a global movement of inclusion.

We explored themes of resilience, reinvention, and the beauty of creating “moments of magic” for children and families through Disability Dream and Do. This conversation was not just inspiring, it was activating. It reminded us that when we choose to pull each other along, we unlock potential far beyond perceived limitations.

A special thank you to our wonderful co-host, Anthony Harrison, for helping bring this meaningful message to our community and for supporting a vision that will continue to impact lives for generations to come.

🌟 Doug Cornfield shared:

  • A single act of childhood kindness, when Ernie Pound brought a Radio Flyer wagon to help Dave in first grade, literally “saved” Dave and shaped the course of his life.
  • Tracked down Ernie 45 years later and surprised Dave at a book signing, leading to an emotional reunion that reignited the power of that moment.
  • That story inspired the children’s book A Pound of Kindness and a broader message that small acts can have a lifelong impact.
  • The reunion of two once-young boys, who later became world-class athletes, proved how deeply one simple act can echo across decades.
  • Their work now honors “unsung heroes” through the Pulling Each Other Along Award, which celebrates everyday people who lift others up.
  • Mission is deeply personal. As the father of a son born with no arms, his journey reinforces his belief in the transformative power of sports.
  • Reinvented through resilience, developing a knuckleball to succeed in professional baseball despite physical limitations.
  • Alongside Dave Stevens, a seven-time Emmy Award winner born with no legs, they model what it means to “Explore Potential” beyond perceived limits.
  • Through Disability Dream and Do (D3 Day) camps, they create free, all-inclusive sports experiences for children and adults with disabilities, producing “moments of magic” that build confidence and belonging.
  • Their larger vision is the Dugout Movement, which generates sustainable funding to expand inclusive camps nationwide and ensure the mission of inclusion and possibility continues long after they are gone.
  • If you want this tightened further for a caption, program description, or speaker intro, I can trim it to fit exactly what you need.
