Grand Potential Podcast

24Feb

We leaned into a powerful moment of collective pause and presence at our Grand Connection event, where Rei McColley guided us through her transformative Mindful Minute practice. Together, we were reminded that slowing down is not a luxury but a biological and emotional necessity that restores clarity, creativity, and calm. As we stretched, yawned, breathed, and settled into stillness, we experienced firsthand how simple rituals can reduce stress, support the immune system, and reconnect us to what truly matters.

The sharing of our value words, community, compassion, freedom, sunshine, peace, created a palpable sense of unity and resonance in the room. This event affirmed that when we pause with intention and come together in trust, we do not just regulate our nervous systems; we strengthen our connections, elevate our collective energy, and create meaningful ripples that extend far beyond our circle.

🌟 Rei McColley shared:

  • The Mindful Minute is a short guided ritual using stretches, yawns, slow movement, breath awareness, and stillness to reset the brain and body.
  • Focused attention can fatigue and “heat up” the brain. Yawning and stretching increase cerebrospinal fluid flow, helping cool and “wash” the brain, similar to brain hygiene.
  • The practice soothes the vagus nerve, helping the body relax and shift out of stress mode.
  • Slowing down, even to “sloth speed,” and pausing are essential gateways into present-moment awareness.
  • A brief moment of stillness allows access to the brain’s salience network, moving participants out of problem-solving mode and into deeper awareness.
  • From that grounded state, participants invite a single value word such as love, community, freedom, or compassion, rather than a thinking-based sentence.
  • Savoring the value word releases serotonin and sometimes dopamine, helping counteract stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline.
  • Reduced stress strengthens the immune system and can positively impact the body, down to the DNA level.
  • Psychological benefits include greater clarity, calm, equanimity, creativity, and more effortless problem-solving.
  • Sharing value words in community enhances connection. Yawning itself may be an evolutionary social bonding behavior, reinforcing collective awareness and belonging.
